The Chimney Climb is one of our unique challenge items suitable for children or adults. We have installed a number of these on school playgrounds, and the children absolutely love the challenge of finding different ways to move up the walls.

We designed this element based on a climbing technique developed for “chimneys.” A chimney is a big crack in a cliff that is wide enough for a climber to fit inside. Chimneys range in width from squeeze chimneys that are just wide enough to accommodate a body to ones that require the climber to ascend it with a hand and a foot on each side of it. The process of climbing a chimney is called chimneying.

We designed the Climb after watching how mountain climbers work their way up a narrow crevice by coordinating the movement of their feet, hands, and backs against opposing walls, and thought it would be an outstanding play element on any playground.

You may remember doing something similar to this as a child, when you stood in a doorway with your back to one side, your feet to the other, and then worked your way up the space with a combination of foot pressure and back shimmy.

The space between the walls and the height of the walls determines the degree of challenge, so please specify how you would like to use this element. With a mud pit below, you can see that this becomes extremely challenging, indeed.

This is great for children five and up, great for a challenge course, and a fabulous way for children to learn more about their bodies, gravity, friction, climbing alternatives, and so on.

As you can see in this picture, this young woman has completely mastered this climbing exercise!

Comes as a kit for permanent or temporary installation; complete installation instructions are included.

For schools and public playgrounds, a fall zone would be required.
